A man accused of committing a number robberies in downtown Kingston was reportedly shot dead during a shoot out with police on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased has yet to be identified.
A police team was reportedly on mobile patrol along Spanish Town Road, in the vicinity of Coronation Market, at about 1:30 pm when a female vendor was observed being held up by a group of men.
As the police approached, the men reportedly opened fire at the lawmen and ran. However, in their bid to escape, the men reportedly ran into the path of another set of police and one of them was shot dead while the others made good their escape.
Sources said that the would-be robbery victim had been targetted earlier in the day by the same men – who are allegedly behind a number of recent robberies in the district – but the hoodlums were reportedly stopped in their tracks when irate vendors saw what was happening and raised an alarm.
The woman was reportedly on her way to report that incident to the police when the criminals tried to attack her a second time.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has launched a probe into the matter.
